Tanyue Mansion: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Grace Kwai's Award-Winning Design Fuses Ancient Elements with Contemporary Functionality

Grace Kwai's Tanyue Mansion, a sales center in Nanning, Guangxi, China, is a stunning example of how traditional architectural elements can be seamlessly integrated into modern design. The project, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, is a testament to Kwai's ability to create spaces that are not only functional but also deeply rooted in cultural heritage.

The inspiration for Tanyue Mansion came from ancient oriental academy buildings, characterized by their wooden stone brick structures and symmetrical layouts. This influence is evident in the sales center's design, from the sand table to the negotiation area and the book bar. The symmetrical space layout showcases the beauty of traditional spatial order, a key feature of ancient academy architecture.

What sets Tanyue Mansion apart is its dual function as a sales center and a cultural platform. The design highlights the expressive force of the ancient academy, promoting the enterprise's brand value. The project covers 680 square meters, featuring a negotiation area designed for relaxation and a book bar with walls lined with books on both sides.

Key to the realization of this design were two art installations. One, a calligraphy piece, hangs in the secondary lobby, inspired by works displayed at the Cologne Fair. The other, located at the reception desk, represents the designer's perception of water. These installations echo each other in form and resonate in spirit, showcasing the richness of Chinese civilization and oriental philosophy.

One of the challenges in designing Tanyue Mansion was integrating traditional architectural elements of Zhuang, a minority group in China, with modern space functions. The screens on both sides of the sales center, simple and delicate, embody this traditional charm. This blend of old and new is the project's most distinctive feature.

The project, which started in October 2018 and was completed in November 2018, is a testament to the power of design as an extension of cultural spirit. By combining local cultural elements with modern design methods, Kwai has created a space that is not only functional but also deeply evocative of the region's rich cultural heritage.

In conclusion, Grace Kwai's Tanyue Mansion is a shining example of how traditional and modern elements can be fused to create a space that is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and culturally significant. It is no surprise that this innovative design was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020.
